Here’s a helpful reminder as we head into the weekend: you are always allowed to eat!

You don’t have to wait to sense physical hunger to eat. Especially if you’re in recovery from an eating disorder, disordered eating or chronic dieting.

We can always trust hunger when we feel it. But it might not always be there when we need to eat.

It’s currently 46°F and rainy 🌧 so I’m daydreaming about yesterday’s summery weather ☀️ and this delightfully refreshing bowl of mint chocolate chip ice cream 🌿🍫🍨 I had on my lunch break 😍

✨Here’s a quick reminder that you can have sweets any time of day, numerous times of day if you want.✨

🗝 The keys are connecting with your body, giving yourself unconditional permission, and not restricting afterward.

🙅🏼‍♀️ Restricting sugar and trying to control it most often leads to feeling out of control around it, having extreme cravings for it, and ultimately bingeing on it.

🍪Whereas allowing sugar with no restrictions or rules and enjoying it in a connected way most often leads to feeling satisfied, calm, and peaceful with it.

My nutrition counseling practice is growing!! 🎉 I am beyond excited to share that Jessica Steinbach, MPH, RD, has joined my practice as an Associate Dietitian!

Jessica is an anti-diet, HAES-aligned RD who is also an ethical vegan! She has experience working with a vast range of clients and specializes in eating disorders and disordered eating. She is based in San Diego and sees clients virtually via telehealth. Her schedule is open and ready to be filled!! 🤩

Psssst... did you know that shame is not an effect

Psssst... did you know that shame is not an effective strategy to get yourself or anyone else to engage in “healthy lifestyle behaviors?”

There is so much nastiness and concern trolling that is completely unhelpful and actually pretty harmful.

So the next time you feel tempted to say mean, judgmental things to yourself or anyone else as “motivation” to “get healthy,” stop. That’s not the way.

You know what is evidence-based for supporting self-care? Self-acceptance. Self-compassion. And of course access to quality healthcare, a supportive social structure, as well as the safety and freedom to pursue health in ways that are personally meaningful and joyful (because systems play a major role here - this isn’t entirely about the individual).

👉🏻Making sensational claims about eating whole plant foods and creating intense fear around other foods isn’t helping to liberate animals. And I can tell you for a fact that this fuels the flames of disordered eating.

This topic has been top of mind lately after a discussion with a group of activists as well as a great convo today with my current dietetic intern.

@ginnymessina lays out some great points here that cover just some of the reasons why the hype can hurt the movement.

In case you forgot ❤️

Loving the way your body looks is a requirement for.... just about nothing.

Sure, being closer to the cultural beauty ideal may make some things in life feel easier (especially for fat folks who endure weight stigma), but you don’t have to buy into the narrative that you can do XYZ if and only if you finally look the way you’ve always wanted. That’s a diet culture + beauty culture scam right there.

Here are some very important things you can and should do regardless of how you feel about your appearance:
-respect your body
-connect with your body
-listen to your body
-nourish your body
-rest your body
